Send Me

Mission poster at sunset with hiker, Bible and backpack; SEND ME by Curt Brickley, signs say Every Tribe, Every Nation, Every Soul

When we hear the words “Send me,” it's easy to picture a missionary boarding an airplane, crossing an ocean, learning another language, and carrying the Gospel somewhere far away. Sometimes that's exactly what obedience looks like.

But Jesus never limited His mission to people with passports.

Before He ascended, Jesus told His disciples they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. The Gospel was supposed to move outward until every tribe, tongue, people, and nation had heard. But notice where the mission started: right where His disciples were standing.

That's why one of the most important lines in this song may be the easiest to miss:

“Stay or go, I'll carry Your name.”

Some of us will go across the world. All of us are called to carry His name wherever He has placed us.

Personal Reflection

Send MeCurt Brickley

I've had the privilege of going. God has allowed me to carry the Gospel into places and among people very different from where I grew up. I've seen believers worship Jesus in other languages, watched national believers carry the Gospel to their own people, and experienced firsthand the urgency of reaching people who have little or no access to the Good News.

Those experiences changed me. But they also taught me something important: missions doesn't begin when we get on an airplane.

We can become passionate about reaching people thousands of miles away while barely noticing the person God has placed across the street. We can pray for unreached nations while remaining silent with the coworker, neighbor, family member, or friend who doesn't know Christ.

That's not the mission Jesus gave us.

Acts 1:8 doesn't say Jerusalem or Judea or Samaria or the ends of the earth. Jesus said and. His witnesses would carry the Gospel near and far, across familiar boundaries and unfamiliar ones, until the message reached the nations.

That is what I wanted this song to say. The prayer isn't merely, “Lord, send me somewhere.” It is, “Lord, wherever You put me, I belong to You. Stay or go, I'll carry Your name.”

Theme

Romans 10 gives this song its urgency. Paul writes that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Then he begins asking questions that leave the Church with nowhere comfortable to hide.

How will people call on Someone they haven't believed in? How will they believe in Someone they haven't heard about? How will they hear without someone proclaiming? And how will they proclaim unless they are sent?

Then Paul writes:

“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

That's behind these lyrics:

“How will they believe if no one proclaims? Send me, send me, oh Lord. Stay or go, I'll carry Your name.”

The responsibility is ours, but the power isn't.

We don't save anyone. Jesus does. We don't change hearts. God does. We don't make the Gospel powerful by our ability, personality, eloquence, or courage. Paul said that we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and carry this treasure in jars of clay so that the surpassing power is clearly seen to belong to God and not to us.

That's why this lyric matters too:

“Let my weakness be my witness. To the power in Jesus' name.”

God isn't waiting for us to become impressive enough to represent Him. He calls ordinary, imperfect, dependent people to faithfully proclaim an extraordinary Savior.

And that proclamation isn't reserved for pastors, evangelists, or foreign missionaries. If you belong to Christ, you are already standing somewhere in the mission field.

Your Jerusalem may be your family, neighborhood, workplace, school, church community, or town. God may call you beyond what is familiar into your Samaria. He may even send you across cultures and nations to people who have never heard the name of Jesus.

The geography may change. The calling to be His witness does not.

Isaiah heard the Lord ask, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” His answer was simple: “Here I am! Send me.”

That's the heart of this song. Not, Send somebody. Not, I'll serve if You send me somewhere exciting. Not even, I'll go overseas if that's what counts as missions.

Here I am, Lord. Wherever You place me, I'll carry Your name.

This song reminds us:

  • Every follower of Jesus is called to be His witness.

  • The Great Commission reaches across the street and around the world.

  • Acts 1:8 gives us a both/and mission—not near or far, but near and far.

  • We don't save people; Jesus Christ saves. Our responsibility is to faithfully proclaim Him.

  • Our weakness does not disqualify us. It can display the power of Christ more clearly.

  • People cannot believe a Gospel they never hear, which gives urgency to faithful proclamation.

  • Some believers will be called to cross cultures and nations. Others will spend their lives serving primarily where God has planted them.

  • Whether God tells us to stay or go, the response remains the same: I'll carry Your name.

Scripture Foundation

  • Romans 10:8–15 — Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ, and Paul emphasizes the necessity of people being sent to proclaim the Good News so others can hear and believe.

  • Acts 1:8 — Jesus commands His followers to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  • Isaiah 6:8 — When God asks whom He will send, Isaiah responds, “Here I am! Send me.”

  • Matthew 28:18–20 — Jesus sends His followers to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them to obey everything He commanded.

  • 2 Corinthians 4:5–7 — We proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord while carrying the treasure of the Gospel in fragile vessels so that the power is recognized as God's rather than ours.

Processing Questions

Take a few moments and reflect:

  1. When you think about missions, do you primarily think about somewhere far away, or do you recognize the mission field God has placed around you today?

  2. Who has God already placed in your life who needs to hear or see the truth of the Gospel?

  3. Is fear, insecurity, weakness, or a sense of inadequacy keeping you silent?

  4. Are you willing for God to send you beyond what is familiar if He chooses?

  5. Can you sincerely pray, “Stay or go, I'll carry Your name”?

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for sending Your Son to seek and save the lost. Thank You that someone carried the Gospel to me so that I could hear, believe, and call upon the name of Jesus.

Forgive me for the times I've been silent when You've given me opportunities to speak. Forgive me when I've treated missions as someone else's calling or imagined that Your work only happens somewhere far away.

Open my eyes to the people around me. Give me compassion for the neighbor across the street and for the person across the world who has never heard the name of Jesus. Don't let distance determine the value I place on a soul.

I give You my weakness, my fear, my limitations, and my excuses. Let my weakness point people to Your strength. Put Your Word on my lips and fill me with Your Spirit so that I can faithfully make Christ known.

If You tell me to go, I'll go. If You tell me to stay, I'll stay. Wherever You place me, let my life say the same thing:

Send me, Lord. I'll carry Your name.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Closing

The fields are still white. The work is still waiting. There are people in distant nations who have never heard a clear presentation of the Gospel, and there are people living within sight of our churches who don't know Jesus.

Romans 10 still asks the question:

How will they believe if no one proclaims?

We don't get to choose between the two. Jesus didn't give us an either/or mission.

Across the street and around the world.

Some will cross oceans. Some will spend a lifetime faithfully serving in the same community. Many of us may do both at different seasons of our lives. The destination isn't what makes someone a witness. Jesus does.

The question isn't simply, “Will I go?”

The question is, “Wherever God puts me, will I carry His name?”

The answer of a surrendered heart is the same in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth:

“Send me, send me, oh Lord. Stay or go, I'll carry Your name.”
