Album cover with glowing cross on a hill at sunset, dirt road leading up. Text: COMING BACK IS SWEET, Curt Brickley.

Most believers don't wake up one morning and decide to walk away from God.

Usually it happens slowly. Life gets busy. Priorities shift. The noise of the world grows louder while the voice of God becomes easier to ignore. Before long, we find ourselves chasing things that promise satisfaction but leave us emptier than before.

The truth is, every wandering heart is searching for something. We look for joy, purpose, peace, significance, and security. The problem is not that we desire those things. The problem is where we look for them.

Coming Back Is Sweet is a song about returning to the One we should have never left. It's a confession of pride, self-reliance, and distraction, but it's also a celebration of grace. Because no matter how far we wander, God's mercy always reaches farther.

Personal Reflection

Coming Back is SweetCurt Brickley

One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that nothing this world offers can compete with what is found in Christ. For a season, lesser things can look appealing. They promise comfort, pleasure, recognition, control, or relief from pain. But eventually every substitute leaves us hungry for what only God can provide.

The lyrics of this song were born from that realization. "I was caught up in the noise of every day, took my eyes off Jesus and stepped away." That's not just the story of one believer. It's the story of all of us at different times in our walk with God. We drift. We become distracted. We begin trusting ourselves more than we trust Him.

The story of the prodigal son has always resonated with me because it exposes both the foolishness of sin and the beauty of grace. The young man believed freedom could be found away from his father's house. Instead, he discovered that everything he was looking for had been there all along. When he finally turned toward home, he expected rejection. What he found was compassion.

That story points us to something even greater. The Father can welcome prodigals because Jesus Christ made a way for them to come home. The cross is not merely a symbol of forgiveness. It is the place where God's justice was satisfied and God's mercy was poured out. Christ took our guilt so we could receive His righteousness. He bore our shame so we could be called sons and daughters of God.

That's why coming back is sweet.

Not because repentance is easy.

Not because the consequences always disappear.

But because Jesus is better than everything we left Him for.

The joy we were searching for is found in Him. The peace we were chasing is found in Him. The purpose we long for is found in Him. Every road of true restoration eventually leads back to Christ.

Theme

Coming Back Is Sweet is a testimony of repentance, restoration, and the relentless grace of God.

It reminds us that drifting may be common, but remaining far from God was never His desire for us. Through Jesus Christ, every wandering heart is invited to return home and find mercy at the cross.

This song reminds us:

  • No one is beyond the reach of God's grace.

  • The cross is where wandering hearts find forgiveness.

  • Repentance is not punishment—it is a return to life.

  • Jesus is better than every substitute this world offers.

  • Coming back to Christ is always worth it.

Processing Questions

Take a few moments and reflect:

  1. Where have you been looking for fulfillment apart from Christ?

  2. What distractions have slowly pulled your attention away from Him?

  3. Have you believed the lie that you've wandered too far to return?

  4. What would surrender look like in your life right now?

  5. Who in your life needs to hear that God's invitation still stands?

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for loving me even when I wander. Thank You for pursuing me when my attention drifts and my heart becomes distracted. Too often I have looked to lesser things for what can only be found in You.

Forgive me for the pride that says I can do life on my own. Forgive me for chasing things that never satisfy. Restore the joy of my salvation and renew my love for Christ. Help me lay down every distraction and every burden at the foot of the cross.

Thank You that Your grace is greater than my failures and Your mercy is deeper than my wandering. Draw me near again and help me walk closely with You.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Closing

The Father is still watching the road.

The cross is still enough.

The invitation has never changed.

No matter how far you've wandered, there is still mercy at the feet of Jesus.

Coming back is sweet.

Because Christ is better than everything we left Him for.
