Tryin' To Breathe

Some seasons don't ask you to run. They only ask you to breathe.

Some days don't feel like faith. They feel like survival. You wake up exhausted before your feet even hit the floor. You lie awake at night wondering how much longer your heart can carry what it's carrying. The weight isn't always visible, but it's real.

This song was not written for the strong. It was written for the ones still here. For the ones who believe, but are struggling to catch their breath.

Personal Reflection

Underwater reaching hands with orange text Tryin’ to Breathe and Curt Brickley, gospel grit country heart song cover

Grief rarely arrives all at once.

More often it settles in quietly. It sits in empty chairs during holidays. It lingers in familiar songs on the radio. It waits in photographs, old voicemails, and places that once held laughter. Long after everyone else has moved on, grief often remains.

Some losses are visible. Others stay hidden beneath smiles, routines, and polite answers to questions nobody really wants answered. Time may soften the edges, but some wounds never fully disappear this side of Heaven.

Tryin' To Breathe was born from watching people walk through those seasons. Seasons where life keeps moving but the heart feels stuck. Seasons where everyone expects you to be okay because enough time has passed, yet the ache remains.

I've seen it in hospital hallways and around kitchen tables. I've heard it in conversations that trail off because the pain is too difficult to explain. I've seen it in parents who buried children, in families learning to live with loss, and in believers who still trust God but no longer have the strength to pretend they're doing fine.

This song is not about victory. It is about honesty.

It is the prayer of someone who still believes God is good, yet finds themselves overwhelmed by grief, exhaustion, disappointment, or loss. It is the confession that faith does not always look like standing on a mountaintop. Sometimes faith looks like taking the next breath and trusting God for the one after that.

What comforts me most is that God is not intimidated by our weakness. Jesus never turned away the weary, the brokenhearted, or the burdened. He invited them to come to Him. The Savior who wept at Lazarus' tomb understands sorrow, and the Savior who carried the cross understands suffering.

That means we do not suffer alone. Even when our strength is gone, Christ remains near. Even when our hearts feel crushed, His promises remain true. Even when all we can do is breathe, His grace remains sufficient.

Theme

The world celebrates strength, confidence, and victory. God often meets people through weakness, dependence, and surrender.

Tryin' To Breathe reminds us that God's presence is not reserved for our strongest moments. In fact, many of the deepest encounters with His grace happen when we have nothing left to offer except honest dependence.

Sometimes faith looks like worship. Sometimes faith looks like weeping. Sometimes faith looks like simply making it through the next hour while holding tightly to Christ.

This song reminds us:

  • God is near to the brokenhearted.

  • Grief is not unbelief.

  • Weakness is not failure.

  • God's strength is revealed in our weakness.

  • Sometimes courage looks like taking the next breath.

Processing Questions

Take a few moments and reflect:

  • Where in your life are you simply trying to breathe?

  • What grief or loss are you still carrying?

  • Have you been honest with God about your pain?

  • What would it look like to stop pretending you're okay?

  • How has God carried you through difficult seasons in the past?

  • Who around you may be struggling silently today?

Prayer

Father,

You see every tear I hide and every burden I carry. You know the names, the memories, and the losses that still weigh heavily on my heart.

Thank You for being near when I feel broken. Thank You for loving me even when I don't have the strength to stand tall. Remind me that weakness is not failure. Remind me that grief is not unbelief. Remind me that Your grace is sufficient even when I feel exhausted.

Help me trust You with the things I cannot fix. Help me release the burdens I was never meant to carry alone. When I don't know what to do next, help me simply take the next breath and place it in Your hands.

Hold me close and remind me that I am never alone.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Closing

Sometimes faith is not running forward.

Sometimes faith is simply refusing to quit.

Sometimes faith is getting out of bed, taking the next breath, and trusting God for one more day.

If that's where you are today, know this:

God is near.

God sees you.

God has not forgotten you.

And if all you can do right now is keep breathing...

that's enough.
